About us

New York Film Academy

The New York Film Academy was founded in 1992 by Jerry Sherlock, a former film, television and theatre producer. Their philosophy is based on a "learning by doing" approach, which every curriculum stems from. They offer an intensive, hands-on, and total immersion approach to learning. The Film Academy is also honored to be the film school of choice for many Hollywood filmmakers, actors, and figures from the entertainment and media world. Every year, hundreds of Chinese students join the NYFA summer camps.

Since 2016, the New York Film Academy (NYFA) has partnered with ASEEDER to offer professional filmmaking courses tailored for middle school students. This program provides Asian students with the opportunity to access authentic American film education. In September 2024, the program will launch its NYFA Filmmaking Winter School in New York, where students will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the "inspiration birthplace" of countless film in New York. They will deeply experience local culture, earn an official certificate and produce personal film works, all of which will strengthen their applications to prestigious universities in the future.

Teaching philosophy

Filmmaking needs lots of knowledge. The combination of that knowledge is what makes the New York Film Academy different. In this course, students not only learn how to use cameras, lights, film editing software, they also gain relevant film knowledge.

In line with the mission and philosophy of the New York Film Academy, this program is intensive and focused on hands-on learning. In the NYFA film camps, each student writes, shoots, directs and edits his or her own films. Our film camps are designed for people with little or no experience in making films. This program focuses on the fundamental elements of visual storytelling that enable the participants to direct their own projects.

Timetable

Beijing Time Contents
7:30-9:30 Tutors from the New York Film Academywill teach students about filmmaking, film pre/post-production skills, analyzing shots & lighting, and exploring the effects of a wide variety of shots types.
9:45-11:45 Tutors from the New York Film Academywill lead students to study shooting view, camera language, and video editing. Students will write, produce, direct, and digitally edit their own film on digital video.
Other Time Creating, shooting, and editing with the guidance of practical instructors.

*Regular online classes are scheduled for 4 hours per day from Monday to Friday; students will carry out work creation for the rest of the week.

Anne Alvergue

Anne Alvergue is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and editor. She directed and edited THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT, nominated for a 2023 Academy Award in the Best Documentary Short film category, and distributed by Netflix. She has been an editing mentor for Directing instructor at New York Film Academy, a guest lecturer at various universities.

Piero Basso

Piero Basso graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Cinema, from the University of Turin. During his career, exceeding two decades, Basso has photographed 17 feature films, and TV series, along with numerous documentaries, short films, music videos, and commercials. His work has been honored at some of the most prestigious film festivals around the globe.

Thomas Barnes

An award-winning writer and director, Thomas Barnes’ films have screened internationally at dozens of film festivals and prestigious venues such as the Director’s guild of America. As well as narrative shorts, he has directed multiple music videos and commercials in Asia, Europe, and USA.These include spots for Coke and M&M and music videos for Rod Stewart, Keke Palmer, and Chinese superstars Faye Wong and Andy Lau.

Dr. Mary Samuelson

Dr. Mary Samuelson received her Ph.D. and MA degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and completed her undergraduate work in Cinema-Television and English Literature at the University of Southern California (USC). Mary has taught courses and advised students in the Cinema and Media Studies and Writing Programs departments at UCLA, the Cinema-Television department at Los Angeles Community College (LACC), and here at the New York Film Academy (NYFA).
